Jesus explicitly describes believers as salt and light.  Salt, in Jesus’ day, was considered a valuable asset.  It had to be stored correctly as improper storage would cause the salt to lose its flavor.  Light refers to our public testimony and example of our faith.  With it, we testify of His love and goodness.  The light of Jesus cannot be hidden and must continually be shed in a dark world.
